SAT Score Percentiles 2026: What Your Score Really Means

Updated Digital SAT score percentile table for 2026: total and section percentiles from 800 to 1600, plus how colleges use percentile data.

Digital SATPercentilesScores

Percentiles translate your SAT score into "you scored higher than X% of test takers" — the most useful context for understanding whether your score is strong, average, or needs improvement.

This guide provides 2026 percentile estimates for the Digital SAT, based on College Board score distribution data and recent cohort reporting.

Total Score Percentiles (2026 Estimates)

Total Score Approx. Percentile
1600 99+
1550 99
1500 98
1450 96
1400 95
1350 90
1300 87
1250 81
1200 75
1150 68
1100 60
1050 50
1000 40
950 30
900 22
850 15
800 10

Estimates based on College Board score distribution reports. Exact percentiles vary by testing year.

Section Score Percentiles

Each section (R&W and Math) is scored 200–800 independently.

Section Score Approx. Percentile
800 99+
750 97
700 90
650 80
600 65
550 45
500 28
450 15
400 5

Key insight: A 600 in one section is not "average" — it is above average (~65th percentile). Many students assume 600 means "C grade" — on the SAT, it means top third.

How to Use Percentiles

For college planning

Look up your target colleges' middle 50% score ranges (not percentiles). A college reporting 1350–1480 middle 50% means half of admitted students scored in that range.

For retake decisions

  • Below 50th percentile (under ~1050): Significant room for improvement with structured prep
  • 75th–90th percentile (1200–1350): Strong score; retake only if below target college ranges
  • Above 95th percentile (1400+): Diminishing returns unless targeting top-10 schools

For superscore planning

If your sections are imbalanced (e.g., 90th percentile Math, 60th percentile R&W), percentiles show exactly where to focus retake prep. See superscore strategy.

Digital SAT vs Paper SAT Percentiles

The 400–1600 scale is unchanged. Percentile distributions shifted slightly when the Digital SAT launched in 2024 because:

  • Shorter test attracted some different test-taker demographics
  • Adaptive format changes score distribution shape at the tails

For practical purposes, percentiles from this table apply to both formats.

Frequently asked questions

What SAT score is 50th percentile?

Approximately 1050 total (520–530 per section) is near the national median for recent Digital SAT cohorts.

What score is 90th percentile?

Roughly 1350–1380 total, depending on the reporting year and cohort.

Do colleges care about percentiles or raw scores?

Colleges report and evaluate actual SAT scores (400–1600), not percentiles. Percentiles help you interpret your score relative to other test takers.

Are Digital SAT percentiles different from paper SAT?

The scale is the same (400–1600). Percentile distributions shifted slightly when the Digital SAT launched, but the overall scale is comparable.
