AP Environmental Science FRQ Guide: All 3 Question Types
Master APES free-response questions: Design an Investigation, Analyze a Problem, and Analyze with Calculation — rubric tips for 2026.
AP Environmental Science FRQs are 40% of your score — three questions, 10 points each, typed in Bluebook. Official rubrics: AP Central APES scoring guidelines.
The Three FRQ Types
FRQ 1: Design an Investigation (10 pts)
Task: Propose a valid scientific investigation.
Earn points by including:
- Clear hypothesis (if/then format)
- Independent and dependent variables identified
- Control group described
- Specific procedure (step-by-step, replicable)
- Data collection method
- How to analyze/graph results
Example prompt: "Design an experiment to test whether fertilizer type affects plant growth rate."
FRQ 2: Analyze an Environmental Problem (10 pts)
Task: Explain an environmental issue using course concepts.
Earn points by:
- Identifying the environmental problem clearly
- Explaining cause-and-effect relationships
- Proposing a realistic solution with tradeoffs
- Using specific vocabulary (biodiversity, carrying capacity, pollution types)
Tip: Always address both environmental AND human dimensions.
FRQ 3: Analyze with Calculation (10 pts)
Task: Perform calculations and interpret results in context.
Earn points by:
- Setting up the calculation correctly (show work)
- Using correct units throughout
- Interpreting the result in environmental context
- Explaining what the number means (not just computing it)
Common calculations: percent change, population growth, energy efficiency, water quality indices.
Universal FRQ Rules
- Answer every part — even partial responses earn points
- Use environmental vocabulary from the CED
- Show units on all calculations
- Be specific — "deforestation in the Amazon" beats "environmental damage"
Practice Plan
- Do 2 released FRQs per week from AP Central (2014–2024 available)
- Score yourself with official rubrics — be harsh
- Track composite with APES score calculator
