Hybrid Digital AP Exams: How Paper FRQ Booklets Work

Twelve AP exams in 2027 use the hybrid digital format: multiple-choice in Bluebook, free-response prompts on screen, answers handwritten in paper booklets. If you're taking AP Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Precalculus, or Music Theory, this guide is essential.
Note: AP Statistics transitioned to fully digital in 2027 - it no longer uses paper FRQ booklets.
How Hybrid Digital Testing Works
Per College Board's hybrid digital overview:
- Section I: Complete all MCQs in Bluebook (same tools: highlight, eliminate, mark-for-review)
- Section II transition: Proctor distributes personalized FRQ booklets with your AP ID label
- Section II: Read FRQ prompts in Bluebook; write all scored work in the booklet
- Submission: MCQ auto-submits; proctor collects booklets for mailing to AP scoring

What's on the FRQ Booklet Cover
Every hybrid subject's booklet front cover includes:
- Student identification fields (completed before testing begins)
- Number of FRQ questions to answer in the booklet
- Section II duration
- Pen/pencil permission (varies slightly by subject)
Proctors read directions aloud; Bluebook also displays on-screen instructions throughout Section II.

Rules That Cost Students Points
- All scored work must be in the booklet - scratch paper is for planning only
- Don't write in the wrong booklet section - follow Bluebook's question numbering
- Show work for partial credit - especially Calc and Physics
- Units and significant figures matter on science FRQs
- Calculator sections are specified in Bluebook - don't use calculator on prohibited parts
